5 Tips for Looking After Yourself As A Young Carer

How to stay healthy and in a good frame of mind.

Being a young carer can be very demanding. It is important to care for yourself and nurture yourself so
you stay healthy. Here are a few tips:

1. Look after your mind.

What healthy things uplift your mind? For example, comedy, jokes, reading about inspiring people, places, things, heroes and heroines, religion, puzzles, games, music, playing a musical instrument or learning a new language.

2. Look after your body.

Our bodies need balanced activity and rest to be healthy. We need to take time for rest, deep breathing and sleep as well as work, study and exercise. If you notice issues with how your body is functioning or feel fatigued speak to a supportive adult and/or doctor. You may wish to make more time for self-care through things like a relaxing bath or shower, a swim at the beach, go for a run, play a sport, or take time out for deep breathing exercises and stretching.

3. Look after your spirit.

What makes you happy and uplifts your heart? Enjoying time with pets, being in nature, singing, music, spending time with close friends, enjoying celebrations, reading a book, or meeting other young carers who you can share experiences with.

4. What and who develops you positively?

What and who lifts your self-esteem and confidence? What and who makes you feel good about yourself? Take time to
do these things and spend time with these people. Our self-esteem is our emotional immune system. It
protects us, boost us and gives us resistance to stresses.

5. Eat healthy food and drink.

Aim to eat fresh fruit and veggies that are in season, whole grain cereals/breads, fresh meats and seafoods, eggs,
legumes (peas, beans, and lentils), nuts and seeds, cold pressed oils, and healthy dairy. Drink up to 2 litres of
water per day and herbal teas. The food you eat really does have a big impact on your energy levels and your
emotional wellbeing.
