How do NDIS supports help to build independence?

If you live with a disability, you may need assistance with some tasks around the home or support to access the community. You may currently rely on family or friends to assist with some of these tasks, but the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) allows for a range of services to support you and to increase your independence.

The 3 main funding categories under the NDIS are Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports and Capital Supports.

Under your CORE SUPPORTS budget you can access services such as:

Personal Care
You can have trained and professional support workers come to your home to assist you with showering, dressing or getting in and out of bed. Whatever your needs are, they can assist you.

Carers to Enable Community Participation
Getting out and about will help you learn new skills such as how to confidently use public transport, see new sights, make new friends and, most of all, do the things you love.

This is support that helps you travel to work or other places that will help you achieve the goals in your NDIS plan.

Some other services include:

  • Household tasks and cleaning
  • Laundry services
  • Gardening and handyman jobs
  • Pet care and walking

Under your CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORTS budget you can access services including:

Allied Health Services
Services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise physiology are great at assisting you to build your independence.

An Occupational Therapist can come and assess your needs in your home and in the community and make recommendations on aids or equipment that might assist you become more mobile or make things easier to do.

Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can also assist your physical health by coming up with exercise plans that can increase your strength, range of movement and mobility as well as help with injury prevention.

Employment Services
Support to assist you find employment. This can include upskilling and further training to make you job ready.

NDIS Plan Management and Coordination
If you feel like you already have enough on your plate, you can have a service, like Your Side, manage and coordinate your NDIS plan for you. Your Side will assist you with identifying your goals for independence and will support and guide you through your NDIS planning process. We can do all the paperwork and deal directly with the NDIA on your behalf.

Under your CAPITAL SUPPORTS budget you can access services including:

Home Modifications
This could be something as simple as an extra grabrail or ramp at your back door. It could also include widening doorways throughout your home if you use a wheelchair.

It can be as big as a refit of your bathroom to make it accessible so that you can shower independently. Or you can even think about smart technology so that you can control your lights and appliances by voice!

Assistive Technology
Assistive technology can include walkers, wheelchairs, scooters and many other aids to assist you getting around more independently.

It can also include communication aids, prosthetics, hoists and other equipment to support your independence.

We have touched on a few areas of how you can gain more and maintain your independence under the NDIS; however this is not an exhaustive list.
