Carer Gateway – New Support Services for Carers
The Carer Gateway can help you if you answer yes to any of the following questions:
Do you look after a family member or friend with disability, a medical condition, mental illness or who is frail due to age?
Do your caring responsibilities affect your wellbeing or your ability to work, study or socialise?
WHAT IS CARER GATEWAY?
Carer Gateway provides in-person, phone and online services and support to Australia’s 2.65 million unpaid carers.
By calling 1800 422 737 Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, you can talk to a Carer Gateway service provider who will help you access services and support.
The dedicated Carer Gateway website connects you to online support and information.

![]() | Counselling If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, sad or frustrated, a professional counsellor can talk with you about your worries and offer help. |
![]() | Respite care Emergency respite – get assistance in looking after the person you care for if an unplanned event stops you from being able to provide care. For example if you are ill or injured. Planned respite – plan for regular breaks to rest and recharge while respite services look after the person you care for. |
![]() | Connect with other carers Meet with people in similar caring situations and share your stories, knowledge and experience. |
![]() | Online skills courses Learn new skills in caring for someone and your own wellbeing, including dealing with stress and legal issues. |

WHO CAN USE CARER GATEWAY?
The services provided by Carer Gateway are free and available to all carers including:
- People providing unpaid care for older people;
- People with chronic illness;
- People with disability; and
- People living with mental illness.
We encourage carers, their friends and family, to access Carer Gateway to find out what types of services and supports you may be eligible for.
If you’re caring for a family member or friend, there is support for you too. Getting help early can make a big difference to your life by helping to reduce emotional and physical strain, and improving your overall health and wellbeing.
HOW DO I ACCESS SERVICES?
When you call the Carer Gateway, our team will walk you through some questions designed to understand what services will help you in your caring role.
These questions will ask about:
- Health
- The caring role
- Managing at home
- Time for yourself
- How you feel
- Finances
- Work
Based on your answers, we will provide you with information, advice and referrals to services already available or our Carer Gateway Services.
WHAT IF I DON’T LIVE IN SYDNEY?
There are Carer Gateway Service Providers all across Australia. We are working as one team to deliver the best possible services for Carers, so we will make sure that you speak to the right person.
WHAT ABOUT THE SERVICES I’M CURRENTLY ACCESSING?
This service is for carers. You can access Carer Gateway services in addition to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or My Aged Care services and funding.

Carer Gateway also offers a national website at carergateway.gov.au where you can find online support and information.
