Live independently at home and do more of what you enjoy
What is the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)?
The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) is funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Health. The program is a basic-needs home support government program that supports Australians over the age of 65 (or 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) who wish to continue staying at home but want additional support, such as household help, meal preparation or delivery, personal care and transport. The services are subsidised by the government and come at a low cost to you. CHSP is used when you need low-level of support. If the complexity of your needs increases you can be referred for a Home Care Package.
Your Side’s CHSP services include:
- Domestic Assistance
- Flexible Respite
- Home Maintenance
- Group Social Support
The primary goals of CHSP are to provide the following:
- To provide basic level assistance to people who are, for the most part, able to cope on their own
- To support people to be more independent at home and in the community
- To keep people in their own homes and communities for as long as possible
- To support community participation and provide a sense of purpose and personal confidence.

Am I eligible for CHSP funding?
You may be eligible for CHSP funding if you:
- Have trouble doing everyday activities without help
- Need support to live independently in the community.
And are:
- Aged 65 and older
- Aged 50 years or older and identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
- Aged 50 years or older (45 years old for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) and on a low income, homeless or at risk of being homeless.
What is the Regional Assessment Service?
To get started with CHSP funding, a RAS (Regional Assessment Service) trained professional will visit you in your home to help identify and assess which services are needed to support you and can be funded under the CHSP. These are typically one to two entry-level services. You may need a new assessment each time you wish to use a different service under this program. If you have further questions about home care service or need help at any stage of the process, call us on 1300 134 332 and one of our friendly Customer Care Coordinators will be happy to assist you.
