Meet Community Engagement Consultant – JOHANNA

Why did you join Your Side?

I like helping people achieve their goals. After working in office-based roles, I was looking to engage more with the community. I attended a Carer Gateway presentation delivered by a Community Engagement Consultant. I realised then I would love to do that job – to spread the word about such an important program, and work in partnership with diverse stakeholders. The opportunity presented itself and here I am! I had also seen Your Side growing in the community sector, supporting diverse groups, and doing great work. I am very happy to join Your Side.

What are your qualifications/background?

I have tertiary qualifications and experience working with diverse groups in settlement services, disability, and helping communities access the health system. I have worked in the Government and non-Government sector.

Which languages do you speak?

My first language is Spanish, from Peru.

What is your favourite thing about working with and for carers?

The surprise and happiness that the Carer Gateway brings to carers, as they can receive much needed support services! I answer their questions, and they decide when to sign up to the program. The engagement and partnership with other service providers is very important when working for carers. We help each other spread the word to benefit our community.

Is there a personal experience with carers that you would like to share? Or do you have a lived experience?

A carer found herself and her little girl stuck in hospital due for much longer than expected. She all of a sudden had to do so much remotely such as filling lengthy Government forms to access support. She only had her mobile phone and no access to a laptop. Luckily through Carer Gateway the team secured her a laptop, not only to aid her in her caring role, but also  attend online counselling sessions.
