Meet Community Engagement Consultant – MAX

Why did you join Your Side?

Someone asked if I wanted to use the Carer Gateway program to support myself while looking after my partner. Despite caring for them for over 6 years I had never heard of the Carer Gateway before. When I looked up the Carer Gateway, I not only believed the supports and services provided immense help to carers, but also it was a fantastic resource that more people should know about. I am very happy to be able to continue supporting the communities I have been working with for years now.

What are your qualifications/background?

I have a Cert III in Individual Support (Disability) and have worked as a Disability Support Worker for several years. I have been the primary carer for my partner for 6 years.

What is your favourite thing about working with and for carers?

When I explain that Carer Gateway is free and not means tested, hearing the relief in their voice as they realise they can access affordable, accessible supports without worrying if it will make their lives more complicated. As a carer myself this is one of the things that I worry about the most when trying to access services.

What type of help and support do you think carers need the most?

Being a carer can take you through many rough patches, especially if the person you are caring for doesn’t meet certain requirements to receive supports. It can leave carers feeling overwhelmed and at a loss of what to do if they are unsupported. I think what the Carer Gateway is most helpful for is helping those odd ones out, people who fall through the cracks and haven’t been able to access the supports that they need, and helping carers feel like they are supported no matter what situation they are in.
