BLOG: How to have conversations about support and care with your ageing parents?

As a sector we are quite often asked the question in Aged Care, “How do I have the conversation with my ageing parents about getting some extra care and support and get them to agree?”

It’s not simple to start this conversation. People struggle to cope with change, and a perceived loss of independence. Here are some tips from the team at Your Side about talking to ageing parents about getting home care to remain living safely, confidently and independently at home:

  • Approach it gently – it can be a sensitive topic. Listen to their input and what they have to say.
  • It can be a strange shift when you need to parent your parents. Traditionally, parents don’t want their kids to worry and will often downplay their fears. Reassure them that this is all part of life and you are in the journey together. Explain that you want to look out for your parents just as they once did for you.
  • Explain they may only need a little bit of help and it is not about losing control or independence. It is more just about getting a bit of support and services to help live a comfortable life at home.
  • Explain that home and aged care services are also there to help and assist them to lead a more independent, enjoyable and fulfilling life. It can lead to more social activities and broaden friendship and support groups.
  • Academic research shows a greater volume of home care services and social support can help delay entry into residential aged care. Your Side’s Social Support group offer a variety of events monthly both online and in person. You can have look at our events calendar here.
  • Be patient and understanding – just like your parents did for you in your teenage years. Empathise and let them know you are there for them.
  • Create a support team and cheer squad. Each family member and friend plays a particular role in your parent’s life.
